What Upholstery Cleaning Actually Costs (And Why Nobody Wants to Tell You)

The real numbers on cleaning a sofa, the add-ons that hide the surprises, and why you should know your price before anyone shows up.

The short version

Most sofas cost $150–$180 to clean. You should be able to see that number before anyone walks through your door.

If you have ever tried to find out what it costs to clean a sofa, you already know the routine. You search around, you find a few companies, and almost none of them will just tell you a number. You get "it depends," you get "we'd need to see it," you get a form that promises someone will call you back. So let's do the thing the rest of the internet seems allergic to and talk about real money.

The honest price range

Professional upholstery cleaning generally runs somewhere between $100 and $300 per piece, with most homeowners landing around $150 to $180 for a standard sofa. A small dining chair or ottoman costs much less, often in the $30 to $50 range. A big sectional can climb past $300 because it is simply more fabric, more time, and more cleaning solution. Leather and delicate fabrics like silk or suede usually cost more because they need special products and a gentler touch. None of that is a secret. It is just rarely said out loud before you have already handed over your phone number.

What moves the number

A few things move that number up or down. Size is the obvious one, since a loveseat takes less work than an oversized couch with five cushions. Fabric matters too, because a sturdy synthetic weave is more forgiving than antique velvet. Condition is the big swing, though. Furniture that gets a light refresh every year is quick work. Furniture that has soaked up years of dust, body oil, pet accidents, and spilled coffee takes real effort, and that effort shows up in the price.

Where the surprises hide

Then there are the add-ons, which is where a lot of the surprise charges hide. Stain protection, odor and pet treatment, and heavy stain removal are common extras, often $20 to $50 a piece or more. Plenty of companies also carry a minimum service charge of $100 to $150, so cleaning one little chair on its own can cost about the same as cleaning a couch. That is not a scam, it is just the cost of sending a trained person and equipment to your door for a single small item.

The part we actually care about

Here is the part we actually care about. You should be able to know the price before anyone shows up. The whole reason pricing feels mysterious is that the old way of doing business depends on you not knowing until it is too late to easily say no. We built SofaBrite to flip that. You send a photo, you see your all-in price, and that price is the price. No phone tag, no callback queue, no quietly inflated total once a technician is standing in your living room. You get to make the decision the way you make every other decision online, with the number right in front of you.
